Checklist for Moving Day

Checklist for Moving Day

Moving can be extremely stressful, especially if you’re not prepared. A bit of planning and organization well before the big day can make things go smoothly. Whether you’ve opted for one of the new homes for sale in St. Augustine area, or you’ve bought a designated Heritage Home in Virginia, your moving checklist won’t change:

Four weeks before the move
*Create a master list of everything you need to do and plan. Keep this list handy and mark things off as you go
*Start decluttering. Clean out your junk drawers, cupboards, china cabinet, garage, attic, basement, etc. Discard or donate what you don’t want. Consider having a yard sale.
*Book your moving van or company if you’re using one. If you have very heavy items, such as a piano, be sure to let them know well in advance

Two weeks before the move
*Notify the utility companies of your upcoming move and new address
*Continue to pack; aim for one room at a time
*If you’re moving to a condo, book the freight elevator
*Once you’re finished packing a room, clean as you go so you don’t have to do it all on moving day

One week before the move
*Finish packing items that aren’t essential for daily use and make sure all boxes are clearly marked with room and items. For example, ‘Kitchen – pots and pans’
*Start defrosting your freezer and cleaning out your refrigerator
*If you have a wood burning fireplace, have the chimney cleaned
*If you have small children or pets, arrange to have them taken care of on moving day
*Call your moving company and confirm the date and time

Moving day
*Time to move! Whether you’re doing it yourself or  hiring movers, ensure everything is loaded securely in the truck
*Clean the house once it’s empty
*Move the boxes into your new home and enjoy!

Whether you move to one of the new homes for sale in St. Augustine or an older home in an established neighborhood, moving can be a lot less stressful if you plan ahead.
