When it’s Time to Get Your Semi Repaired

When it’s Time to Get Your Semi Repaired

There are a number of truck drivers who are frugal and are looking to save money where they can. They typically fall into two different categories:

   * Try to do it yourself
   * Hire a professional to do it for you

A lot of this is going to depend on whether you are an owner-operator company driver or a standard company driver as well as the type of repair that needs to be done. Truckers do have the ability to prevent some of the repairs that are needed on their semis which will prevent more severe repairs from being required.

Easy Repair vs. Non-So Easy

It is recommended that every truck driver carry a small set of basic tools just in case they are needed for a basic or simple repair. Repairs such as replacing a headlight or fixing a flat tire may be able to be done on your own if you have the proper equipment and training. Here are a few other semi-truck repairs that you may be able to handle on your own.

   * Repairing your landing gear crank handle
   * Replacing the seals on glad-hands
   * Installing a new grommet and taillight on your trailer
   * Replacing a mud flap

Then there are more severe repairs that require a replacement of a large part of the truck or more extensive work on the body. There are forms typically in the truck that you need to fill out if you need something major replaced on your truck. All truckers are held accountable for basic maintenance of the vehicle but should also report any breakdown to their driver manager or supervisor. All of this information must be reported in a timely manner. If you are not sure if your truck needs repair, contact your driver manager.

Finding a Semi Repair Shop

If your trucking company does not have a mechanic to take their trucks to, there are many businesses who perform semi-repair in Chicago and can help you keep your semis in great working order. You should always have a repair shop that you go to on a regular basis so that you know you can trust them and rely on them in an emergency.

It is important to take care of your truck with basic maintenance. However, emergencies do occur. Make sure your report it to your manager and have it repaired as soon as possible, for your own safety.
