Learning martial arts is fun. Here are a few tips to help you make the most of your sessions.

Pick a good coach

When you sign up for a class, make sure you pick one with a coach you like. Consider the instructor’s teaching style before you join the session on the mat. If you’re already attending a class but find the instructor’s teaching method, not to your liking, then check out other classes for Gracie Jiu-Jitsu in Martinsburg.

Gi or no gi training

Invest in both gi and no gi training. At Gracie Jiu-Jitsu in Martinsburg our basic or beginner program is no gi and advanced program is with the gi. Learning the techniques with no gi is more street ready and makes you a better attacker. Learning the techniques is more sport and makes you a better defender.

Practice. A lot.

Don’t limit your practice time to your classes. If you want to improve your skills that much sooner, then watch the techniques online too. That way, when you get to your classes for Gracie Jiu-Jitsu in Martinsburg and train, you’ll see a marked improvement in your skills right away.

Talk to other students

Polish your moves by asking for tips and advice. Get help from other students. Talk to them. That’s going to do a lot to help you improve the accuracy of your movements so you can execute them cleanly and without any mistakes.

Do your homework

Don’t go to class unprepared. If there are movements you have trouble with, go over them in your mind. You’ll want to brush up on your knowledge of other key movements to help you improve.

Give yourself time

You aren’t going to improve in a week. Not even in two or three weeks. That said, give yourself time. Be patient. Keep at it, and you’re sure to get better.
