Just about everybody knows what CPR is. And because of how well-known it is, most people know what to do if someone is choking on food or having a problem breathing. However, most people have no idea what to do if a person is dealing with suicidal thoughts or if they are having a panic attack. Mental health first aid training is designed to provide people with the knowledge, tools, and experience needed to adequately handle these equally life-threatening health issues.
In the same way that CPR educates you on what to do if a person is having a heart attack, mental health first aid training teaches you about the risk factors and indicators that a person is dealing with mental illness and addiction. You are also taught strategies to help someone, whether in a crisis situation or not. You will also know when the situation is beyond your ability and where to turn for help.
Some people take these courses because there is a specific person they work with or live with that they want to help. Course work is tailored to meet the needs of specific populations. There are courses for teenagers and adults. Some courses are taken by public safety workers.
There are several stigmas surrounding mental health that need to be addressed. Mental health problems are common, but because of the stigmas, people try to hide their issues and don’t seek the help they need. Getting mental health first aid training is beneficial, especially because it’s likely that you or someone around you will deal with a mental health illness in their life.
