If you are one of those people who missed the solar eclipse of 2017, or perhaps you did not live in the path of totality for that eclipse, you may be lucky to see the total solar eclipse in 2024.
It may seem unusual for two total eclipses to pass across the United States in just seven years, and that is actually very true. Before the eclipse in 2017 on August 21, which first made contact in the United States in California and last in South Carolina, the previous eclipse to pass over the USA was 38 years ago.
The total solar eclipse in 2024 is moving through the USA on a different path. On April 8, 2014, it will enter the United States in Texas, moving through the eastern parts of the country and then passing over Newfoundland on the eastern tip of Canada before going out into the Atlantic Ocean.
There are several major cities in the path of totality, where the sun will be completely blocked for a period of time. These cities include Austin, Fort Worth, Dallas, Indianapolis, Cleveland, Detroit, Buffalo, Rochester and then into Canada.
In addition to the path of totality, the solar eclipse will be visible for many miles on either side of the path, offering some great opportunities to see the total solar eclipse in 2024 from both urban and rural areas across the country.
Important Safety Tips
While watching the solar eclipse in 2014 is an amazing experience for kids and adults alike, it is critical to wear approved solar eclipse glasses. Even glancing at the sun as it becomes visible again after the eclipse, or trying to look at a partial eclipse outside of the path of totality can have a long-term impact on vision.
There are several different styles and options in solar eclipse glasses. They can be a very low-cost safety option and designed as single-use glasses. There are also plastic glasses that can be reused, and both make a great keepsake of the event.
While 2024 is still a long way off, planning and customizing a design for solar eclipse glasses is an exceptional way to advertise or to promote your charity, organization, school or group. By planning early, you have the ability to take the time and get just the look you want as glasses to sell or to give away.
