Being an Ob/Gyn in Salt Lake City can be very rewarding. However, it is not easy to become a doctor in this field. It takes a certain type of person to spend the energy and time to achieve this goal. It also takes someone with total dedication to medicine to adhere to the rigorous path of higher education.
Before a medical professional can become a qualified Obstetrician and Gynecologist, he or she must undertake and successfully complete various education and training requirements. The American Board of Obstetrics and Gynecology (ABOG) is the medical entity responsible for establishing the specifics. The route an interested individual needs to take consists of the following:
1. Four-Year Undergraduate Degree: Subjects should relate to the medical field and include the study of anatomy, biology, and chemistry. It is very important to receive high marks in all subjects and to graduate with honors.
2. Medical College Admission Test (MCAT): Before you can enter medical school, you need to ace this daylong comprehensive examination.
3. Four-year Doctorate: Would-be-doctors can only obtain this at an American Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) accredited residency program in Obstetrics/Gynecology. In general, the program combines classroom work with practicum. Anyone who wants to become an Ob/Gyn will select elective courses focusing on this field.
4. Internship and Residency: Before anyone can qualify, the have to complete at least a year-long internship followed by a 3 to 7-year residency at a qualified hospital.
Whether a doctor plans to practice in Salt Lake City Utah or San Francisco California, they need to pass the United States Medical Licensing Examination (USMLE). Every state makes this mandatory. Furthermore, if the doctor wishes to practice as an Ob/Gyn, he or she must also apply for board certification from ABOG. This requires taking a two-day examination.
