Painting a Room is the Perfect Do-It-Yourself Project for a Homeowner

Painting is something that homeowners can easily do themselves. By painting the walls of your home yourself, you can save thousands of dollars. Painting a room or even the exterior of your home only requires paint, drop cloths, brushes, rollers, and painter’s tape.

However, to get the best results, choose your paint and tools carefully. The best paint brushes and rollers can make a difference to the paint you are using. If you are using water-based paint, a brush with synthetic bristles is fine. For oil-based paints, a natural bristle brush is preferred for a smoother finish. However, don’t use a natural bristle brush with water-based paints, because the bristles absorb water. When that happens, the brush will become too limp to use.

You’ll also need to choose the right type of paint roller for the job. The roller’s nap is important; for smooth walls, a roller with a low nap is perfect. But, walls with a rough surface, such as stucco, require a longer nap. Foam paint rollers can be used on very smooth surfaces, and are also good for painting cabinets.

In addition to choosing the right paint brushes and rollers, you’ll also need to choose the right type of paint. For most walls, water-based latex paint is fine. But, durable oil-based paint might be a better choice for a room with high humidity, like a bathroom. Oil-based paint also produces deeper, richer colors.

Painting is one of the easiest do-it-yourself projects and it can save you a lot of money.
