Dealing With A Toothache

Pain from a toothache is beyond description, it may be the worst pain that anyone can suffer. A combination of a pounding head, throbbing gums and a sore mouth makes you want nothing more than to crawl up in your dentist’s chair.

If you get a toothache in Mount Prospect, why does it develop? How can you ensure that you won’t get a toothache and what can you do if you do?

Why does a toothache develop?

A tooth comprises three layers, the outermost layer is the enamel, below it the dentin and below it again, the pulp regions. The enamel protects your teeth from mechanical damage, blood vessels and nerve endings are in the pulp. When the nerves are irritated the result is pain and discomfort, this is the reason why the dentin and pulp are protected by the enamel; substances that can cause irritation to the nerve endings are stopped by the enamel.

The enamel on a tooth can break down, minute cracks can occur or decay can wreck havoc with the protective enamel. When food and drink reaches the pulp region the result is a sharp pain. In the event of decay it is bacteria in the pulp region that starts an infection. Pain from decay can be extremely intense and sustained.
