You wouldn’t normally buy something that had a chance of breaking down soon after you purchased it. Nor would you typically pay to have something fixed, knowing full-well that you might have to bring it in for the same repairs again.
But drug addiction is never simple, and overcoming it is rarely easy. Even the most disciplined, sincere patient might struggle through several relapses at Los Angeles treatment centers before overcoming their addictions. According to the National Institute on Drug Abuse, between 40 to 60 percent of drug addicts have a relapse.
The Causes of Relapses
Relapses often occur if the underlying problems behind the addictions are not addressed. Remember, drug rehab centers are there to help, but if you don’t give them the full details as to why you are taking drugs in the first place, then they cannot help you deal with the underlying causes.
In fact, various studies have shown that while social and environmental factors, along with physical and psychological dependence, are at the heart of substance addiction, directly addressing them is difficult for patients since they wish to conceal their “weakness” from the world. This leads to numerous cases where patients conceal pertinent details from the psychologist at the rehab center, resulting in a flawed treatment program.
Does Relapse Mean Rehab Failed?
In a word, “no.” As the National Institute on Drug Abuse points out, relapse is “likely” due to the chronic nature of the disease. A relapse simply means more treatment is needed, or the current treatment should be adjusted.
Rehab is only as Effective as you Allow it
The effectiveness of rehab depends entirely on how much you’re willing to let the process work. You should not expect it to be instantaneous, nor should you think that it is unachievable. Getting better is all about taking things one step at a time and acknowledging the fact that it is a process that is in its earliest stages.
Fact is, you may always be an addict. But that doesn’t have to define you. Instead, how you overcome it may be the most defining moment of your life – and it starts with being honest about your addictions and willing to make a change.
